どうも！M1の松尾でございます！[今年から研究室のメンバーも投稿します。-greg] 3月24日（金）は長崎大学・大学院の卒業式でした！ 卒業生の皆さん、4年間から6年間（もしくはそれ以上…？）の学生生活、本当にお疲れさまでした(*'ω'*) センターからも多くの方が卒業されていきます。非常に寂しい限りです…。 Greg研からの卒業生はM2の井上さんと才津さんでした。 ただ井上さんは現在高知で行われている 藻類学会 に出席しているため、卒業式は欠席でした。 センター飲み会では、例年通り先生からの記念品贈呈と、卒業生からの感謝の品のプレゼントが。 今年卒業生の井上さん才津さんからGreg先生に贈られた物は、スナッフィー君の絵とその絵をRで描くためのコードが焼き付けられたマグカップでした。[後日コードを公開します。-greg] 壇上に上がった時から涙目だったGreg先生ですが、マグカップのスナッフィー君に少しだけ癒されたようでした(笑) 才津さん本当におめでとうございました！就職されても頑張ってください！ センターでBBQをやることがあったら呼びますので、ぜひ社会人の力（お金♡）を行使していただきたいと思います。 卒業生の皆様のこれからも、幸多からん道のりであることをお祈りしております。 追伸 もう一人の卒業生である井上さんの影が薄すぎるので、高知を楽しんでいる井上さんの写真も乗せておこうと思います。

Went to the Nagasaki Science Museum(長崎市科学館) today. They were having a small activity for school children. One of the activities dealt with making a globe. But something is wrong with the globe I wonder if you can figure that out. Take a look.

So, Kotoe and the rest of the 4th year students at the Institute gave their thesis presentations today. I was surprised by the quality of the presentations this year. All of the students probably did their best to get the data and give an informative talk. Her presentation was on the retention time and dispersion of a fluorescent tracer in the canopy of Sargassum thunbergii. She also got as far as examining how fish in the canopy affects the dynamics of the tracer. The images are probably a bit hard to see, but the students do their talk with powerpoint slides and need to keep it under 12 minutes (8 minutes of talk and 4 minutes of discussion). She was able to peak Prof. Nakata's (oceanographer) interest, and he asked a few question that I think she really didn't understand. Hopefully she can address them in the thesis. Anyways, she is staying on as a grad student in my lab, and I think she wants write up her research as a paper and do fieldwork for her masters.

One of our professors at the Institute for East China Sea Research is retiring this March. As is customary for the professors leaving the Faculty of Fisheries of Nagasaki University, they present their final lecture that typically covers their entire career at NU. He is one of the professors here at Nagasaki, that helped shape my career here, and will probably continue to do so, even after he retires. In fact he will probably stay on as a Professor emeritus, and we should see him more often. If things work out, he will be moving his lab from the main campus to the our campus. Anyways, Prof. Kazumi Matsuoka gave his talk regarding dinoflagellate species diversity and paleobiology. I never realized it, but he had written a number of important papers linking the resting cysts (spores) and the adults. This type of research apparently is useful in identifying fossil records of similar cysts.  I was also amazed that many of his former students took the time to attend ...

３月２３日は大学の卒業式の日でした。午後から、水産学部の学生や博士前期課程の院生は大講義室で、学位記を授与された。学位記の授与後には、学部長からの言葉や同窓会会長からの言葉もありました。最後には学生代表からの感謝の言葉などもあった。 ことしは例年と違い、研究室から初めて学生が卒業しました。山田さんと木村君は沢山の難しい課題をのりこえて、立派な卒論発表ができました。ご苦労様でした。 卒業式のあとは、学部の祝賀会そしてセンターの一次会、二次会と三次会がありました。祝賀会は大学の生協の２階でおこない、一次会は第３講義室でやりました。

快晴だったので、三重地区のまわりをサイクリング。膝の調子はまだ１００％ではないが、１時間ぐらいはしりまわっても痛くは感じなかったので、いいかな。魚市場を見下ろす展望台についてら、埋め立て前の海岸線をはっきり描いた地図を見つけた。結構な沿岸域が消えたんだね。 It was just too nice of day to not go cycling. My knee isn't 100%, but after 1 hour of riding around, it doesn't hurt, so I guess that's good. At the top of hill is lookout that gives a good view of the surroundings. Especially of the fish-market and the fishing port. But what was more interesting was the map I found there. It gives a really nice idea of the natural coastline before they filled it in. And boy did they did a lot of filling.

3日かけて、生物コースの臨界実習を無事に終了させた。遅刻した何人かの学生はいたが、問題のない実習だった。  初日は多以良川の河口域で生物採取をして、センターで同定とスケッチをした。二日目はウニの発生を観察し、夜は集魚燈をつかってプランクトンや小魚の採取。あいかわらず、先生らが一番盛り上がっていた。最後の日には、魚市場の見学とレポートの作文。 お盆休みは楽しみだ。 皆さんお疲れさまでした。

今日は大村湾の子湾、形上湾で調査している。午前の天気は悪かったが、午後からはよさそうだ。 Today, I am at Katagami Bay for some fieldwork. The weather was bad in the morning, but its going to be nice in the afternoon.

今日は4年生の合同計画発表会（ゼミ）だった。3人の学生の発表は想像したとうりだったので、まよかったとおもう。ただ、もうちょっと言い方を考えてほしかったな。 Today we had a seminar for some of the 4th year students to present their research proposals for the year (I know it is a bit late). Three of them took turn giving their talk, which was better than I expected. However, they could work on the delivery. ま、ゼミの前に、三重港の防波堤の手前で潜ってみた。思ったとうりに、藻場は消滅していたが、魚はたくさんいた。 Anyways, before the seminar, I took a short dive off on the other side of the seawall nearby. I was expecting most of the seaweeds to be gone, but I didn't expect so much fish. モジャコやアカエイ、アイゴはみらた。 At the very least, I saw juvenile amberjack, some rays, and rabbit fish. 今シーズンのワカメの残り。The last bits of Undaria pinnatifida from this season. サンゴもある。You can see some coral too. ホンダワラ類の新芽。New shoots of Sargassum . モジャコ。Young amberjack (I think). アイゴ？Siganus fuscescens (Rabbitfish) ? アカエイ。大量にいた。There were a large school of Dasyatis akajei (Whip ray)  (I think...) アカエイ。Whip ray....

台風が直撃するかもしれないのに、明日は沖縄へ。琉大のK原さんと一緒に海草の実験をしにいきます。台風がくるならテンション上がらないな。機材も送ったし。旅券も買ったし。 しかたがない。31日に帰られるのかな。

最近、あまりポストしてないね。ことしはTTの最後の年で、最終評価の書類の準備で4月はとても忙しかった。さらに、データの統計解析や学生とのフィールド調査と屋外水槽での実験にも時間がかかり、なかなかブログの更新ができない。 Recently, I haven't had time to post anything. This year is my last year before I get tenure and spent most of my time writing up the documents to submit for review. Not to mention all of the data analysis, field work, and lab experiments that are going on... 今日は大村湾の調査風景を少し紹介します。 Let me show you a few photos of Omura Bay. S野先生の研究室にいた、エチオピアの留学生が無事に修了し、博士になった。(左側が彼です。)パスポートの写真と全く違う人に見える。日本語もペラペラになって、刺身とビールが大好き。 センターは静かになるな。 By the way, the new Dr. S just graduated from Dr. S' lab. He's going back home to Ethipoia (the dude's on the left, by the way). Just to let you know that he in no way look like his passport photo when he first arrived in Japan. 今日は長崎大学の卒業式です。これが、水産学部の式です。12:30からだったが、藻類学会の発表の準備が遅くなったため、1時間おくれてしまった。 Today was graduation day and this is a look at the ceremony at the Faculty of Fisheries. It's already 12:30, so I arrived 1 hour late. I had to get ready for the Phycology Meeting at Toyama. Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.7

国際シンポがおわった。シンポの計画・企画に全くむいていないことがよくわかった。U澤先生のおかげで、いいものなった。僕は、会場で司会だけだ。 北海道大学や金沢大学からも先生らがきて、またセッション２がおわったあと計画していなかった、研究紹介までしてくれた。ありがとうございます。 今週からは、修士課程の発表会や自分のデータ分析で忙しい。2本の投稿した論文の修正もしないと。一つはAquatic Botany,もう一つはEcological Research。どちらも上手くいきそうだが、ABのやつを発表するのを止めようとおもっています。 あ、来月の１日から、センターに新しい助教の着任が決定。詳細は来月。 ２０１１年のシンポの写真は PICASA へ。 The Symposium is finally over, and I can get back to normal day-to-day life. One thing I realized is that I am terrible at planning and carry-out these kinds of meetings. If it wasn't for U, I think we would have been in big trouble. All I did was yap on stage and introduce the speakers. A couple of professors came from Hokkaido University and Kanazawa University, and they even were gracious enough to present some of their work, without warning, at the end of the last session. I'd like to thank them for putting up with our guerrilla tactics. That doesn't mean I'm not busy, since this week we have the Masters Students final presentations...

Happy New Year. 久しぶりに3連休をとっていて、久しぶりにTVをよくみている。ところが、気になる表現がよく、TVにながれているね。「ハッピーメリークリスマス」ってどいうこと？「ハッピー」と「メリー」をこのように、なれべることは珍しいね。 「メリー」は"Merry"。【形容詞】　　陽気な、愉快な、笑い楽しむ、お祭り気分の、浮かれた 「ハッピー」は"Happy"。【形容詞】　うれしい、幸せそうな どちらも形容詞です。"Have a happy and Merry Christmas"なら、まだわかる。 やっぱり、あまりTVみない方がいいかも。 ところで、今年から長崎大学で大学院の改組をしました。あらたに、5年一貫性の博士コースをたちあげた。ある程度の奨学金っもでます。藻類の生理生態学に興味のあるかたは、僕に連絡を。 リンクはこちら。 I finally took 3 days off. When was the last time I took 3 days off? So, I've been watching alot of TV, and there is a lot of crap on TV. Indeed, there is a persistent Japlish phrase that is a tad irritating. "Happy Merry Christmas". First time I've ever heard this before, and it sounds dumb. Perhaps putting an "and" between happy and merry would make it sound much better. Happy New Year everyone. いま実験中です。野外で、水路２基を設置し、 ノコギリモク の群落スケールでの光合成速度を測定しています。 いつも、水温は15℃前後ですが、さすがに今日は13℃です。 YSIのproODO をつかっていて、この機種は大変丈夫です。海水・雪がかかっても問題ない。 I'm still running experiments. At the outdoor facility, I have setup 2 flow-chambers to measure the primary production of simulated stands of Sargassum macrocarpum . Usually, the water temperature is about 15℃, however today it dropped to 13℃. The proODO are really nice for these experiments since they can handle all the seawater and snow that gets on them.

ソテツ（ Cycas revoluta ）は亜熱帯の植物で、氷点下10℃でも、対応できるそうです。ソテツは沖縄のイメージがつよいので、雪の積もったソテツってかなりの違和感があります。 センター玄関前のソテツです。 The Cycas revoluta can be found throughout Southern Japan, and can withstand temperatures as low as -10℃. However, I tend to associate this cycad with Okinawa, so it is really strange to see snow piled up on the fronds. The photo is of the cycads in front of ECSER.

4年前、カナダのゲルフ大学でPDをしていました。もちろん冬は必ず雪が降りました。今日の天気は懐かしいですね。 Reminds me of Guelph.
