Back in Kagoshima

Back in Kagoshima to retrieve the instruments we deployed last week. But I also brought the rain from Nagasaki. Hopefully the rain will remain a drizzle during retrival.

Only 4 days left

Are they going to finish on time? They are supposed to finish everything by the end of this fiscal year...

Nagasaki University graduation ceremony

Today, the students are having their graduation ceremony. The undergrads and Masters have their ceremony done together.

Fieldwork is hardwork

The field season is already underway, but the semester doesn't begin until April. That doesn't stop us from running surveys, but using grant money is inconvenient. Since my Masters student is graduating, I didn't bring him on this trip, and it really showed. Setting up the instruments took much too long. An hour too long. But, Kotoe and Mako got everything going and with the help of  Prof. Terada, the instruments were placed in a nice dense Zostera patch.

In Kagoshima for some fieldwork

This weekend, I am doing some field work in Kagoshima, and I was expecting the weather to be warm. However, today's high is only 14 ℃!

A better look at the new buildin

It took about 4 months, but the scaffolding came down and we got our new "cherry blossom" colored building. The color not what we were expecting, and definitely not the same color that was shown to us from the catalog. In hindsight, we should have looked at the catalog under natural light and not the fluorescent ones! The building actually looks like a typical women's clinic in Japan, which are often some shade of pink or red.

Classes start on the 7th

The entrance ceremony is April 2 and classes start April 7. It's going to be a busy April! I have classes every Monday morning, the ECSER orientation for the the 4th year students are on April 8. To be more precise, April 2: Entrance ceremony April 3-4: Field work at Amakusa (天草藻場調査) April 8: ECSER orientation (オリエンテーション) April 11 - 13: T/V Kakuyo-maru (鶴洋丸乗船) April 17 - 20: T/V Kakuyo-maru (鶴洋丸乗船) April 21 - 25: T/V Nagasaki-maru (I probably don't need to go on this one; 長崎丸乗船未定)

Almost finished

The new building is actually almost finished! But they painted it pink... Well maybe we can call it "cherry blossom". From today to the end of the month, we need to move 3 labs to the new building, and add one from the main campus! Basically, ruined my chances of going to this year's meeting of the Japanese Society of Phycology.
