一つは微細藻類の研究で、二つめは "Species richness of marine macrophytes is correlated to a wave exposure gradient" by Gregory N. Nishihara & Ryuta Terada です。 Although the Phycological Meeting is not yet finished, I am glad I went. My talk appeared to be received well and I got to meet most of my friends and had a good time. Not to mention, I was able to confirm the safety of a number of colleagues from the Tohoku Region (where the earthquake and tsunami hit). After I present my poster, my work is done. Next year, the meeting will be held in Sapporo, and it will be the 60th anniversary of the meeting. Unlike the traditional March meeting, this time it will be held in July 13 - 15. Next year's ASLO meeting will

He's going back home to Ethipoia (the dude's on the left, by the way). Just to let you know that he in no way look like his passport photo when he first arrived in Japan. He loves sashimi and beer, and speaks Japanese fluently. ECSER will be very quiet without him around... Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.8

So I finally arrived in Toyama. It took about 6 hours on a number of ANA flights to get here. So far away! But I think I was lucky. At Nagasaki, the ground crew told me, "the flight from Haneda to Toyama might be late, since it is snowing heavily in  Toyama." By the way, the flight from Haneda to Toyama was terrible, since I had to sit next to a second grader that kept wasn't the behaving. I feel sorry for the Grandfather that was accompanying the kid, since he on the receiving end of the kid's incessant whining. Published with Blogger-droid v1.6.8

We also went up to Mt. Unzen. The weather was not-so-good, and it was cold and snowing a bit, however we  could still barely make-out the  Ariake Sea. NTOU seemed to have a good time with the cold and snow, though.

On Thursday, we went on a field-trip to Isahaya Bay and Tachibana Bay. Ofcourse, along the way we stopped at Shimabara Castle and also took a look at some of the restored Samurai houses. The photo is a small canal that runs through the road among the homes. There were no freshwater plants in the canal, but there were quite a few moss/lichens. I think I also some some masses of cyanobacteria, but who can be sure.

Wow!! On Wednesday morning, Prof. RK picked up some of the NTOU group, including the Vice President (VP), from the hotel and arrived at ECSER at around 10 AM. From morning to noon, Prof. I and S gave them a tour of ECSER. The VP let us know that noodles would be a nice lunch, so we (Prof I, YK, and I) took them to eat udon . In the afternoon, YK and I took them to the Fisheries Research Station next door for a tour. Although they must have been super-busy, since the Prefectural Senate is in

The vice president of the National Taiwan Ocean University, and a number of faculty, researchers, and students came to Nagasaki to help celebrate the opening of our Office of International Exchange between our two institutions. I was the moderator (master of ceremonies?) of the ceremony, which involved speeches by either side, as well as unveiling a plaque and what-not. Personally, I think I did a terrible job at moderating. English or Japanese, I will need to look-up how to do this, since I have a feeling that I will be doing more of this in the future...

On the last day of February, I went to the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature in Kyoto, since I was invited by Prof. Nagao to attend their symposium regarding the present and future of peninsular regions. The basic idea of their research was to study the peninsula wholly, rather than use it as a field-site. To me, the idea is similar to the Kagoshima Univerisity's Research Center for Pacific Islands . Everyone was all giddy and excited during the after-symposium dinner (too much beer &  sake ), and I felt like I wiped-out on a tsunami. It looks like I will be doing some work with them. I guess all is well since I was always interested in taking a look at the macroph
