最初はこんなに人がいたが、 At the beginning of the conference, there were a lot of delegates, 最後の日にはこんなへった。 but by the end, it looked like this.

先月クアラルンプールで開かれたPacific Science Congressに行ったとき、会場はペテロナスタワーのとなりにあった。料金はらえば、2枚めの写真にみえる両タワーをむすぶ橋までいけますが、興味なかったので行ってない。 ショッピングモールの入り口から見えるペテロナスタワー。A view of the Petronas Tower from in front of the shopping mall. ここは公園からです。This is a view from the park. 近辺のビル、手前にあるのは公園の池。The building around the area with the park's pond in the foreground. コンベンションセンターの裏入り口。The rear entrance to the convention center.

Pacific Science Congressがおわりました。この最後の日、まだいくつかのセッションがあったが初日の2~3割程度の参加者しかのこっていない。ま、これはどの大会でもありえるが半分以上の発表者がドタキャン。要旨集に名前と課題をのせただけだ。 So the Pacific Science Congress is finished. On the last day, there were a number of sessions on-going, how ever 20 ~ 70%  of the speakers never showed up! This isn't so unusual, but having more then half of the speakers to not show up is really bad. So all they did was get their abstract into the abstract book. みんなイイカゲンだ！ Good grief! しかも、インドからきた博士課程の学生の発表のひどいこと。図もない、写真もない、統計もない。文字だらけの白いパワーポイント。会場の先生方はみんなやさしかった。「院生だからこそ、失敗してもいいんだよ」だってさ。 I think I had the displeasure of listening to the most terrible presentation I have ever seen. So, this PhD student from India begins his talk. No photos, no figures, and no stats. Maybe a table or two. Oh, and his slides where monochrome (i.e., black and white). All text. 2日目のキーノートスピーカーはNOAAのDr. Kenneth Shermanと政策研究大学院大学の黒川清教授（ ブログ ）。3日目のキーノートスピーカーはマレージアDr. Zakri Abd HamidとUniversity of Western CanadaのDr. Gordon McBean。生態学者として、もっともおもしろい話はDr. Shermanのかな。Large Marine Ecosystem (LME)について、いろいろ語り、東シナ海はLMEであることも言ってくれました。ま、そうでしょう。黒川先生はとて charismatic であり、会場のテンションは確実にあがりました。 On the second day, the Keynote speaker was Dr. Kenneth Sherman of NOAA and Dr. Kurokawa of GRIPS. On the third day, the Keynotes were Dr. Hamid of Malaysia and Dr. Gordon McBean of Univ. Western Canada. As an "ecologist" I think Dr. Sherman's talk was the most interesting. He gave a broad discussion about Large Marine Ecosystems. You see, the East China Sea is one of these LMEs. By the way Dr. Kurokawa's talk was very charismatic and the whole audience had a good time. 僕の発表は昨日（木）の１２：２０。セッションはBiodiversity and Ecosystem Services.藻類は僕だけ。あとは、トルコなど中東アジアの植物と野鳥の多様性についてのはなしばっかり。しかも、どちらかというと、種数と種名のリストをずらりとみせるだけ。非常につまらなかった。これで、だいたいこのCongressのレベルが分かった気がする。僕は気持ちよくしゃべっていたが、突然会場のノートP...

クアラルンプールにきて、二日め。ようやく大会がはじまった。旅のつかれで、あさの８時までねぼうしたが、まだまだつかれています。会場で琉大のReimer先生にあった、髪の毛がのびてたので、一瞬「だれだろう」と思いました。日本からの発表者は少ない気もするが、Telemedicineのセッションの発表者は全員日本人。 It's been two days since getting to Kuala Lumpur. The congress has begun. I woke up late, at 8am, probably because I am still tired from all of the traveling. At the congress, I met Jamie, from Ryu-Dai; he's had hair, so I didn't recognize him! There aren't many from Japan here, although in the session on telemedicine, all of the speakers are Japanese. キーノートスピーカーはCSIROのDr. Wenju Cai（気候変動のモデラ）とマレージア政府のDzulkifli Abdul Razak先生（持続可能なアジア２０６０という発表でした）。どちらの発表者は納得するようなこととわけの分からない発言をしていました。正直いって、あまりサイエンスじゃないなとおもった。なによりもスペキュレーション。だって、将来日本と韓国は海の底まで沈み、ニュージーランドはオウストラリアの５０％あたりの面積に増えるんだってさ。United States Empireもローマと同じように衰退するらしい。いいなじゃない。わけが分からん。 The keynote speakers for today were CSIRO's Dr. Wenju Cai, who is apparently a climate modeler and the Vice Chancellor of USM and a member of the Malaysian Government Prof. Dzulkifli ...
